INHERITED OR NOT?
Faith plays a large part of the Christian belief system.  Hebrews 11:1 tells me “1. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (KJV).  Well, you will find how faith works even when all hope seems to be lost in a child who suffers a life-threatening special need. I realize Jesus healed the blind, deaf, lame, raised the dead etc.

Albeit for me to know why God is not healing a child who suffers with life-threatening condition; it is my job, as a Christian (part of the church body),  to make those who suffer with any type of life-threatening special needs welcome into the church family.  God did not tell us to avoid those who are sick and afflicted, but it is the church’s responsibility to follow 1 Corinthians 12:26, “26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it” (KJV).

When one family member suffers, the whole family suffers. Therefore, if the church has a heart of Christ, then they will be compassionate enough to be of service in any way they can.

Children with Life-Threatening Diseases and Churches

Many times, family finds it difficult to feel comfortable or welcome in the church due to their special needs
child, therefore it is imperative for the church is to be the example and learn as much as possible to commit
to welcoming everyone.

In the book Including People with Disabilities in Faith Communities we find how there should be no barriers
between those with special needs and the church leaders as well as the church family.
It is imperative to:

  • Involve the Leadership by researching what can be done to be more welcoming. (Carter, p. 70)
  • Once the leadership is prepared then the leadership should prepare the congregation
for ways to include all who are special needs; from making the restrooms handicapped accessible
   to teach the congregants to:

  1. Listening- get to know a person (Carter, p. 73).
  2. Connect Gifts with Opportunities (Carter, p. 73).
  3. Connect Support with Need (Carter, p. 73).
  4. Cultivate Relationships, etc. (Carter, p. 73).
